New Hampshire Family Vacation Home Enhanced

Head north toward lakes and farms, past cows grazing and small general stores that sell everything under the sun. Keep traveling, further up a dirt road than you thought it could go. Then, when the trees open up and expose rolling fields and a sprawling farm house, you have arrived at one of our favorite houses in New Hampshire.

Long time residents of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, Ken and Barbara purchased this large, welcoming home  in 1999 and since then the house has become a family institution. It has been the venue for weddings, birthdays and family reunions over the years hosting hundreds of friends and family members. “There is no typical for this house” says Lisa, Ken and Barbara’s daughter. “At times there are only two in the house, but it has often welcomed over 50!”

The ability to host so many guests without feeling like a restaurant was one of the challenges Jewett Farms + Co. designer Matthew Lord faced during the design process. By creating multiple work spaces and mixing materials and colors Matthew was able to maintain the comfortable atmosphere of the house, while allowing space for many people to get into the kitchen and easily work simultaneously. “The kitchen is wonderful in that it doesn’t feel too big when it is just my parents there. But it can accommodate a huge group”.

Maple perimeter cabinetry is hand-painted and topped with Brazilian Barroca soapstone. An antique oak island provides extra counter space from all sides and houses the 8 burner gas range. The kitchen has two sink areas, an aspect that chief dishwasher Ken finds extremely functional. And the butcher block topped baking island with custom baking tray storage and a mixer lift, is painted red to provide a fun aesthetic contrast. This island is the perfect spot for Barbara to bake, something that is much appreciated by the rest of the family!

The 80 acre property provides many fun outdoor activities from tennis, swimming in the pool or nearby Newfound Lake for boating in the summer. Cross Country skiing in the winter or downhill skiing at nearby resorts and Lisa and Ken’s favorite activity, exploring the woods with the kids and trying to follow the paths cleared by Ken. Eastern White Pine hardwood floors installed and finished by Jewett Farms + Co. are a perfect, durable fit for all the feet that pass through.  Long active days outside make for hungry kids and adults! “We have always piled into the kitchen space to cook together” says Lisa. “But the new kitchen has allowed us to be a lot more comfortable while doing it” This beautiful and spacious home now has a functional and stylish kitchen that will welcome many more guests for years to come.
