Giving Tuesday. Celebrate generosity

17 Min.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

There are many different ways to give. From a donation of your time to your community to a financial gift to a worthy cause. These are some groups that are close to our hearts. We hope they move you to support them, or inspire you to give in your own way.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND The EDF began in 1967, as a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, EDF founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, they’re one of the world’s leading environmental organizations. In the U.S. For more than 50 years the EDF have been pioneers, using science and different perspectives to make the environment safer and healthier for us all.

SAVE BRISTOL BAY.  Bristol Bay is one of the largest salmon spawning grounds on earth.  It’s currently relatively undisturbed by development, but a proposed mine in this pristine location would decimate king and sockeye salmon runs that depend on it’s waters.  This fight has been going on for a long time and is hopefully nearing conclusion, but the mining corporations are a formidable enemy.  They still need all the support that they can get.

EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN.
EFAC addresses the opportunity gap for talented Kenyan primary school graduates who cannot afford to continue their education. Their program offers 8 years of scholarships, mentoring and career development to hundreds of students with the brightest minds yet the fewest resources.
EFAC scholars are girls and boys who live in extreme poverty. The majority of scholars come from three major backgrounds: urban slums, pastoral villages, and refugee camps. Without an EFAC scholarship, their dreams of attending high school and college would never be realized.

RESCUE CHARLIE’S FRIENDS
Many dogs lose their homes due to fire, floods or hurricanes. Others are abandoned, neglected or abused. Whatever the cause,  RCF’s mission is to rescue them and match them with a loving forever family. Most of the dogs come from high-kill shelters. The shelters do the best they can but due to limited facilities, dogs can’t stay long. Dogs must be moved out quickly or be put down. RCF brings the dogs to Maine where foster families care for them until they are adopted.

SAMARITAN’S PURSE
On top of all the work they do for international disaster relief, their Operation Christmas Child touches the lives of millions of children every year. Shoe boxes are filled across the nation and then sent out to 3rd world countries, full of necessities and toys that we in America may take for granted. While shoeboxes have already been filled and collected for this year, we can still donate to help with the shipping costs.
