Designer — New York City

Jewett Farms + Co. is looking for an experienced Designer to join our New York City team.
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone with approximately 3–5+ years of professional design experience who can step into active, high-end residential projects and contribute immediately.
Our designers take over once a project moves from sales into design and remain deeply involved through the development of the project. The role requires strong design instincts, excellent drawing skills, attention to detail, technical understanding, and the ability to collaborate with clients, architects, builders, our sales team, and our technical and production teams.
Our designers also understand that great design happens within the realities of a project budget. You'll be responsible for designing to established budgets, working with the sales team to price projects as the design develops, and presenting updated budgeting to clients throughout the design phase.
Just as importantly, we want someone who looks beyond the initial scope of a project. Great designers see opportunities—to improve a space, solve a problem differently, add functionality, introduce another element, or expand the design in a way that makes the overall project better.
What You'll Do
* Lead the design development of custom cabinetry, kitchens, built-ins, furniture, and architectural millwork projects.
* Work directly with clients, architects, interior designers, builders, and the JF sales team.
* Translate the initial project scope and budget into thoughtful, highly resolved designs.
* Design within established project budgets and understand the financial implications of design decisions.
* Work collaboratively with the sales team to price projects throughout the design process.
* Present design-phase budgeting and pricing updates directly to clients.
* Identify opportunities to expand and improve projects through good design.
* Develop layouts, elevations, details, material selections, and design solutions.
* Collaborate closely with JF's technical design and production teams to ensure designs can be successfully built and installed.
* Manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and follow-through.
* Maintain accurate project information using JF's CRM and project-management systems.
* Participate in client meetings, presentations, site discussions, and design reviews.
* Take ownership of projects rather than waiting to be told what to do next.
What We're Looking For
* 3–5+ years of professional design experience.
* Experience in high-end residential design, custom cabinetry, kitchens, millwork, interiors, architecture, or a closely related field.
* A strong design portfolio demonstrating both creativity and technical competency.
* Strong drawing and documentation skills and proficiency with professional design software.
* SketchUp Pro proficiency is a plus, but not required.
* Excellent spatial thinking and attention to proportion, material, detail, and function.
* An ability to understand budgets, pricing, and the cost implications of design decisions.
* Comfortable discussing project budgets and pricing directly with clients.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Comfortable working collaboratively rather than operating as an isolated designer.
* Organized and capable of managing multiple active projects.
* Comfortable working within CRM and project-management software.
* Comfortable interacting directly with sophisticated clients and design professionals.
* Commercial awareness—you don't need to be a salesperson, but you should understand that design decisions affect project value, cost, and profitability.

About the Role
This is a design position, not a sales position. JF has a dedicated sales and business-development team in New York.
We want the designer to focus on what they do best: taking a good project and making it exceptional. At the same time, our designers have ownership of their projects and understand the relationship between design, scope, budget, and the successful execution of the work.
You'll work closely with JF's Head of Design while collaborating with our designers, technical designers, sales team, and production team across our New York, Boston, and York, Maine operations.
This is an in-person position based in our New York City showroom. There is some flexibility when circumstances require it, but this is not a work-from-home or remote position. We believe the collaborative nature of our design process—and the interaction between designers, clients, sales, and the rest of the JF team—is best supported by working together in person.
For the right designer, this is an opportunity to have significant involvement in some of JF's most interesting residential work while becoming an important, long-term member of our design team.

Junior Designer — Boston
Jewett Farms + Co. | Boston, MA | Full-Time | In Person
Jewett Farms + Co. is looking for a talented Junior Designer to join our Boston design team.
This role is for someone early in their design career who has strong fundamentals, excellent design instincts, proficiency in SketchUp Pro, and a genuine desire to learn the craft of designing highly customized residential cabinetry, kitchens, furniture, and architectural millwork.
You'll work closely with our Head of Design in Boston and collaborate with JF's designers, technical designers, sales team, and craftspeople.
This is an opportunity to learn within a company where design and fabrication are closely connected. You'll see projects move from an initial idea through design development, engineering, fabrication, delivery, and installation—and learn how excellent design decisions translate into things that actually get built.
What You'll Do
* Support the Head of Design and other JF designers on active residential projects.
* Assist with layouts, elevations, details, material selections, presentations, and project documentation.
* Produce and develop project drawings using SketchUp Pro.
* Participate in client and internal design meetings.
* Help prepare for client presentations and design reviews.
* Research materials, hardware, appliances, fixtures, and other project components.
* Assist with showroom organization, samples, materials, and presentations.
* Coordinate information between design, technical design, sales, and production.
* Maintain project information using JF's CRM and project-management systems.
* Learn how custom cabinetry and millwork are designed, engineered, and built.
* Gradually take on greater project responsibility as your skills develop.
What We're Looking For
* Education or early professional experience in interior design, architecture, furniture design, kitchen design, or a related field.
* Approximately 0–3 years of professional experience.
* Proficiency in SketchUp Pro. You should be comfortable working in the software when you arrive—we are not looking to train someone in SketchUp from the ground up.
* A portfolio that demonstrates strong design instincts and attention to detail.
* Strong drawing and spatial-visualization skills.
* Excellent spatial awareness and an understanding of proportion, material, and composition.
* Curiosity about how things are made.
* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Comfortable communicating and collaborating with a team.
* Willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and learn.

What This Position Can Become
We are not looking for someone to remain a design assistant indefinitely.
The goal is to develop the right person into a JF Designer capable of independently managing projects and working directly with clients and design professionals.
You'll work closely with experienced designers and technical designers and have direct exposure to our fabrication process in York, Maine.
Over time, you'll learn not only how to design beautiful spaces, but how to understand construction, materials, cost, client relationships, and the decisions that turn a concept into a successful finished project.
About the Role
This is an in-person position based in our Boston showroom. There is some flexibility when circumstances require it, but this is not a work-from-home or remote position.
For a junior designer especially, we believe being physically present matters. You'll learn by working alongside experienced designers, participating in client conversations, reviewing materials and samples, and seeing how design decisions move through technical development and fabrication.
