Open Shelving is here to stay

10 Min.

Open Shelving seemed to be having a moment, but as time has passed open shelving has evolved from a trend to a useful kitchen design element. And it seems as though it’s here to stay. But of course it has to be done right, we take a look at how to incorporate open shelving into your kitchen design.

With no doors to hide behind, open shelving can be a scary prospect. But open shelving can provide a design element to your space that can be truly beautiful. The trick is knowing what kind of shelving to add, where to add it, and what to put on it.

Part of the design

Open shelving is not just an add-on, it needs to be part of the overall kitchen design. These open shelves are made from rift white Oak to match the integrated cutting boards below. They are gently curved to perfectly mimic the countertop and base cabinet curve. And they provide a natural end point for the high marble backsplash.

The right material

Reclaimed wood or barnboard offers a casual feel to your kitchen. This could work as a continuation of a rustic design or as a way to bring warmth and livability to a more formal space.

perfect placement

The space between these two tall cabinets would have been overwhelmed by adding wall cabinetry, and look empty if left with nothing. Open shelves are the perfect solution here. Surrounded by storage, the shelves can be artfully decorated and provide a feature wall amongst storage.

corner solution

Placement is key here as well. the open shelving here creates an open feel in the corner and allows the backsplash tile to wrap around, without looking awkward.

Shelves with purpose

This beverage station is built into the opening between kitchen and dining areas. The open shelving creates light in the small space with embedded lighting. And provides a way to display beverage related items.

who doesn’t love a nook?

The ideal spot to create a little library or an art wall – a nook is a truly custom design feature and open shelves are its perfect companion.

True utility

Not everyone wants to hide everything away. Open shelving can be both utilitarian and great looking. Lean into the open and find the beauty in everyday objects.

This is not open shelving

In order to keep your open shelving looking beautiful you’re going to need storage space in your kitchen separate from your shelves. During your design process make sure that you have included enough storage for your less beautiful (more utilitarian) items. Then you can play freely with your open shelves.

Whatever the style of open shelving you prefer, we can help you find the right material and space for your kitchen.
