One Mudroom – up close and personal

If you don’t live in New England you may think that our unwavering fixation on mudrooms is a little over the top. I invite you to spend a weekend here between September and May, and I think you’ll understand why we are such big fans of the humble mudroom.

We recently photographed a fantastic home in historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The home was transformed from a dated 1930’s bungalow to a contemporary house with Scandinavian influences. We worked throughout the entire first floor from kitchen, bathroom, office, and entertainment room. But possibly my favorite space is the mudroom entryway.

Thoughtful design

A seat for pulling your boots on and off, hooks for coats, upper shelf storage and a floor to ceiling cabinet that offers a huge amount of storage including lower drawers – one of which is specifically designed for water bottles, so you’ll never forget one as you’re running out the door to the gym (as this family does a lot!).

The other side

More drawers for tidy storage of all the mudroom things. From keys and ear buds to hats, sunblock, mittens and hand warmers, any of which could be needed in a 24hr span. This is New England after all. I particularly love the window into the office. I watched first hand as a daughter in the family popped her head through the window to say goodby to Dad as she headed out. It’s fun and creates a space that has flow and interest.

Style, storage and utility

This mudroom balances beauty and function. It is the main entry into the home and they place that all guests come through. For that purpose it provides a lovely greeting area and a taste of the rest of the home. But it’s also the place where snowy/muddy/wet boots are left, big coats are removed and hats and gloves need to be stored. By providing storage areas that make a style statement and offer tons of useful storage this mudroom maintains dual usage perfectly.
