Design that’s gone to the dogs

10 Min.

Over the years Jewett Farms has grown and changed but one thing has remained constant, we’ve always had dogs around. From our first shop dogs, Molly and Duncan, who explored a little too far from the original JF cabinet shop and were returned in a York Police squad car (twice). To Bozeman who has been coming to work since he was a tiny puppy. Riley, who should make a commission given his persuasive sales techniques. Dave, JF’s scruffiest canine team member, and many more. We love our furry friends and we truly value our relationships with them. In fact, we love them so much we have dedicated some design expertise to creating cabinetry and spaces with dogs in mind.

Pooch approved kitchens

Naturally, we should start with the kitchen. Our favorite spot in the home can also cater to our favorite 4 legged friends. The kitchen is the perfect place to create a doggy dining area. An alcove in a lower cabinet or island is the perfect spot for built-in food and water bowls (no spilling), a plumbed-in faucet for fresh water on demand, and additional storage for dry food, treats, and monthly flea and tick medicine. If your dog has more refined tastes, adding a refrigerator drawer is the perfect spot for their fresh food and any temperature-sensitive vitamins or medications. A fridge just for your dog – too much? Paws-itively not!

Off limits areas

Sometimes our dog friends need a little assistance staying where they are supposed to stay. And let’s face it, baby gate style leaves a lot to be desired. This is where we need a little cabinetmaker ingenuity. Instead of an ugly baby gate, how about a half-pocket door? Easy to slide away when not in use, completely functional in stopping dog traffic and they look great.

A space to shampoodle

Dogs are great. We love dogs. But no one loves stinky dog smell. Clearly, the solution is to build a doggy shower into your laundry room. A tiled half wall around a shower pan provides the perfect cleaning spot for Fido. A handheld shower head and hose can be plumbed directly into the shower area or run from the laundry sink. Bonus – wet doggy towels can go directly into the washing machine.

Best in show storage

From coordinated leash and collar sets to warm winter coats and paw-sized snow boots, our furry friends come with accessories and those accessories need to be stored somewhere. A carefully designed custom-built mudroom with cabinets for storage, rollouts, and baskets is the perfect place to keep all those dog goodies tidily stored away. Baskets for chew toys, shallow rollouts for plastic baggies, and even hanging space for those doggy jackets.

A bed to rival any couch

We often design and build beautiful built-in bookshelves and fireplace surrounds in living rooms and family rooms. These can be the perfect spot to incorporate a comfy and cozy dog bed. Using the lower shelves and adding a plush dog bed creates a haven for your pooch so they can enjoy spending time with the family without jumping on the couch or anyone tripping over a dog bed on the floor.

We wouldn’t have it any other way

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is a life diminished.” Dean Koontz

While some of our dog-centric cabinetry ideas might be a little bit much, they speak to our belief that you should create the spaces that make you happy. Be creative and design without the constraints of other people’s rules. Because if a space is perfect for you, then it’s perfect.
