Spray Finishing Cabinetry – the JF way

6 Min.

There’s nothing quite as smooth as a perfectly sprayed cabinet. Sprayed finish, when expertly applied, is beautiful and durable, and smooth as glass. But not every sprayed finish is made equal. There’s a lot of time, effort, and skill that goes into creating the perfect sprayed finish. Here’s a rundown of the steps the Finish department at JF takes to ensure sprayed finish perfection every time (if you don’t feel like reading – scroll down, we made a video of the whole process!).

Process

Our sprayed finish is a multi-step process involving 2 coats of high-quality water-based primer, and 2 coats of custom tinted water-based paint. Before and between each coat of primer or paint the cabinet is sanded by hand, or if it’s a flat panel it goes through our large sanding machine, and then inspected by hand. So, to recap, that’s 4 coats of paint and 4 rounds of sanding by hand.

Prep is key

The true secret to a perfect finish is behind the scenes and involves 400-grit sandpaper. Each of the 4 rounds of sanding is done by hand by our finish team. Cabinet boxes have nooks and crannies that can be tricky to get into, it takes patience and practice to ensure that no rough spots remain.

Wielding the spray gun takes practice

There is an art to using the spray gun. Members of our finish team take at least a year to train and gain the necessary skills to wield the spray gun. Not only does one need to master the smooth spray into corners and on conflicting plains, but also the difference in how specific finishes spray. They start with clear finishes and then move on to primer, and then they finally graduate to the final finish.

We made a short video to show how we spray and the steps that go into making the perfect sprayed finish. Cameron gave us his expertise and Gene and Sam showed off their skills. Give it a watch!
