Soapstone remnant ideas
9 Min.For the DIY and craft gurus among us, a soapstone remnant is a resource with unlimited potential for functional, and beautiful projects. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Table Top
A remnant is typically a piece of stone that is smaller than counter depth (26″) so they’ll often fit perfectly on side tables or coffee tables. It’s a pretty simple project that just involves sanding the tops and rounding the edges to your desired profile.
Radiator Covers
Soapstone soaks up heat and holds onto it for a long time. When you place soapstone on top of a heat source it will continue to radiate heat long after the heater is off, keeping your room warmer for longer. Small soapstone remnant pieces can be sanded and placed on top of radiators. Or, for the more ambitious DIYers, you could make a three sided radiator cover.
Cheese Plate
Soapstone will also hold onto cold temperatures, making it a great options for keeping your holiday charcuterie cool during parties.
Backsplash
A solid soapstone backsplash makes a huge impact. And you only need remnant sized pieces to do it.
Farmers Sink
This one’s a little more skill based, but we have sold stone pieces to folks who want to DIY their own soapstone sink – and they’ve reported success. A farm sink consists of 4 side pieces, seamed together and adhered to the base. The base needs to a drain hole drilled and to be sanded to create a pitch. It’s not super easy, but it is a doable project that can be made out of remnants and create a gorgeous result.

Boot Warmers
Warm a long, narrow soapstone remnant on your wood stove or in your oven and carefully place it inside your cold, wet boots. An easy, old school, boot warmer.
Windowsills
Dress up old or basic windows with a soapstone sill. Easy to fabricate and install.
Bathroom Vanity Top
Bathroom vanities are typically smaller than kitchen countertops and remnant pieces can often be used. Cutting the sink cutout can be tricky, but is a doable DIY project. Or choose a vessel sink for an even easier project.

Half Wall Cap
A soapstone remnant provides a great solution for topping half walls. They create a stable platform that can be utilized as a shelf as well as a wall top.
Shelves
Soapstone shelves are beautiful. Make sure you have a strong support plan for the shelves because soapstone is incredibly dense and very heavy.
Outdoor Kitchen Counters
An outdoor kitchen is a prefect place for soapstone because of it’s hardy nature. If you’re piecing together small counters for either-side of your grill then a few soapstone remnants will be perfect. Learn more about soapstone outdoor kitchens.
