Anatomy of a Kitchen

11 Min.

The What the Why and the how

This traditional white kitchen has secrets. Hidden behind the classic cabinet doors are details that make perfect sense for the family who use it. Each and every JF kitchen is unique, with different details and options for each home owner. We open the cabinet doors on this kitchen and take a look at the details hidden inside.

power up

Removing the clutter of charging cords and devices was a key request from this homeowner. We added this clever charging station to the side of the refrigerator cabinet. By extending the length of the cabinet we created extra depth that allowed space for this shallow cabinet.

Easy Bake

Slide in, slide out. This mixer tray is mounted to drawer slides and when it’s not in use it lives behind a pocket door. This solution takes up less space than a traditional mixer lift, but retains the ease of use. The cabinet uses the space that would typically be difficult to access between the wall and double ovens. This placement makes for easy baking with the oven to the side and soapstone countertops that can have hot baking sheets placed right on them. It’s a perfect baking triangle.

One of a kind sink

The idea for this sink was brought to us by the homeowner. She had seen something similar in a magazine and loved the function and look. We took her idea and designed a custom sink with integrated drainboard made from soapstone. The countertop overhangs the sink for easy cleaning, And the drainboard slopes right into the sink. Also in this photo you can see the closed pocket door, behind which resides the stand mixer.

Drinks over here

The biggest bottleneck in their previous kitchen came from those who need a drink getting in the way of those who were cooking. We solved this by creating a beverage area, near the fridge and island sink, and out of the way of the cooking prep area.

drawers that make sense

This kitchen has beautiful windows that run along one full wall, and the home owner wanted to avoid upper cabinetry. So the lower cabinets needed to be well designed to store everything. We included drawers for every purpose, from reusable water bottles to cookie sheets and dinnerware. Each drawer has been thoughtfully designed and placed to make sense for the way this family utilizes their kitchen. There is also extra storage on the seating side of the island. This storage space is not super easy to access for everyday life, but it’s the perfect spot to store seasonal and seldom used items.
