Lets Get Organized

16 Min.

Beauty means nothing without functionality, and that requires organization. We spent a week looking at kitchen organization solutions on our social media and it was interesting to see what resonated with folks, and also what questions popped up. Let’s dig in!

spice it up

Spice jars are habitual offenders in cabinetry organization. Their short stature and narrow base means they often leave usable space above them and have a habit of falling over. We have a few solutions.

Our favorite is the spice drawer. This custom built insert is designed to fit most common spice jar sizes (yup, we went to the grocery store and bought one of each brand). Each row is slanted so that the spice jars rest at an angle, keeping the spices at the bottom of the jar and not in the lid. The placement of the drawer is up to you, it could be in a baking station or beside the range, whatever makes the most sense for the way that you cook.

When we posted a spice drawer solution on Instagram one of the comments asked what we could do in a kitchen with no drawers. JF designer Paula has all kinds of tricks up her sleeve. “If someone has no drawers we can do a spice rack on the back of the door. We can always add an custom spice pull out for an existing door cabinet. We would remove the hinges and attach the pull out to the door front, adding the slides for the pull out on the bottom of the cabinets. Lastly we can always add roll outs and place the insert in the roll out inside an existing door cabinet”

blind corner solutions

Blind corners result from two cabinet frames adjoining together at a corner generating a space that is oddly shaped, dark and hard to utilize. Unless your kitchen design is a true galley with one straight line of cabinetry, it’s likely that you’ll have corners to deal with. The most important message we have is: Don’t give up the space. Fortunately, there are some great solutions.

Magic Corner. When you open a blind corner cabinet with a Magic Corner installed, everything inside the cabinet comes into full view within seconds. This is achieved when the front baskets, closely followed by the rear baskets, travel along with the door and entirely outside of the cupboard as you open it. You’re essentially pulling out the entire shelving unit in one, fluid movement.

Le Mans Corner. This unit is similar to the Magic Corner in that it brings the entire contents of the cabinet out for easy access; however, instead of separate baskets, there are two peanut shaped trays: One on the top and one on the bottom. These durable trays are uniquely shaped to swing easily and smoothly out of the corner cabinet and into full view. Pull out whichever tray you need at the moment; they each move separately, unlike the Magic Corner, which moves as a single unit. Fun fact: the unique shape of the Le Mans corner is loosely based on the shape of the Le Mans race track.

Device organization

There’s no escaping the devices. From laptops to tablets and phones, we all have them and they all need to be charged. There are a few options to keep the cords and screens off your counters. A drawer with outlets wired into the back is a good solution. Another creative option (that we featured on our instagram recently) is a shallow cabinet with outlets and USB’s wired into the shelves. We created the space for this cabinet by extending the refrigerator cabinet a little – just enough to add a shallow end cabinet for charging.

Knife Organization

No one needs a sharp knife loose in a drawer, and I’m yet to find a countertop knife block that isn’t an eye-sore. What’s the solution? It will come as no surprise that our favorite knife organization is built in our shop. Our custom knife block drawer inserts keep knives safe, sharp and away from small hands all while keeping countertops clear of clutter. That’s a win.
