Extraordinary Soapstone

6 Min.

The availability of soapstone varieties is not set in stone (see what I did there?). In our warehouse we have a few slabs that are not only beautiful, they are also potentially the last of their kind.

Black Venata

This soapstone is a beauty. Black Venata has many of the same qualities as Barroca or Santa Rita and is around the same level of hardness. Black Venata is a lovely charcoal grey with thin white veining. The Black Venata quarry puts out a limited supply of slabs that meet our exacting standards.  So the when the emerge, we buy them.  Historically, we see this happen 1 to 2 times a year. We currently have 7 slabs available.

True Barroca (the original)

About two years ago the last slabs were removed from the Barroca quarry. 42 slabs were removed and sold to our distributor. We snagged as many as we could and we have 4 slabs remaining. We believe these to be the very last true Barroca slabs available.

our standards are high

True soapstone is a truly wonderful thing, we only choose the finest slabs to stock our warehouse. When we’re sourcing our soapstone we look solely to M. Teixeira soapstone. We trust their process and oversight to ensure that the slabs they import are from high quality quarries. Roger Teixeira personally visits and inspects the quarries on a regular (non-coved times) basis to keep an eye on the quality of both stone and production.

We choose to bring only the best slabs into New England. We choose a curated selection of stone species, we look at the size of the slabs and try to find the largest ones for the fewest seems in your counters. We consider ourselves to be boutique stone sellers. We offer a smaller variety but every slab is gorgeous.
