Overview

This coastal New Hampshire home is a gorgeous blend of natural walnut, light-painted cabinetry, and a striking black hutch with bronze mesh doors. But the special part of this project is the incredible level of customization that resulted from a strong collaboration between the homeowner and JF designer, Paula.

Exacting customization

The homeowner told us she put herself through ‘kitchen school’ before embarking on this project. The reason she selected Jewett Farms + Co. to design and build their kitchen was because of the level of detail she wanted in this space. She came into the project with a clear directive: to create a kitchen that had a place for everything. She wanted all her silverware in one large drawer, so she measured every piece so that we could create a drawer insert that had a perfect spot for every item. She also measured each utensil so that we could customize her utensil drawer and keep them off the counter; she counted her knives, and the knife block insert we built had precisely the correct number of slots.

A kitchen for every member of the family

The two golden doodles of the family have a plumbed-in food and water area, with a slide-out in the cabinet next to it for dog food and a shallow drawer hidden above for supplements. Every detail has been considered. Some of the requests from homeowners fell into the category of things we have done before, but some were completely new. These new ideas were designed by Paula, engineered by our technical designers, and built by our cabinetmakers.

A place to come home to

Every part of the house design speaks to creating comfortable spaces where guests can be social or enjoy their privacy. The kitchen was also designed with this idea as the guiding force. The couple was on the fence about having two islands, wondering if it was a little excessive for their empty nest. But Paula saw the vision, and the homeowner said that over the holidays, she couldn’t have been happier when her whole family was home and gathered in the kitchen with room for cooking, sitting, snacking, and mixing cocktails - all at the two islands.
